Affordable time tracking for small teams, but lacking the compliance features modern businesses need.

Verdict: 6.9/10

EzClocker has plenty of positive reviews online, and my rigorous testing revealed the reasons users are generally satisfied. The app may lack the modern and polished aesthetics, but‌ even the digitally inexperienced can easily find their way around. This is because of the lean set of features and the well-thought-out layout.

On the feature front, ezClocker covers the basics well but might fall short for business owners looking for advanced tools. For example, it checks the boxes for companies that want to track time for fair remuneration. You can also configure ezClocker to track breaks automatically or manually.

However, it may not be suitable for businesses operating in states that mandate paid and unpaid breaks, like California. The app also tracks daily and weekly overtime accurately. Unfortunately, the overtime tracker works on weekly and bi-weekly pay periods and can’t track other types of overtime.

EzClocker’s scheduling module also sticks to the basics. It lets you assign shifts, but lacks handy tools like drag-and-drop, shift swaps, and recurring shifts. I also found that the scheduler doesn’t come with an automatic conflict detector. For this reason, you have to flag and remedy schedule conflicts manually, which can be a tedious and error-prone process.

All factors considered, I wouldn’t recommend ezClocker for businesses in regions and industries with strict labor laws. For example, healthcare businesses that need to schedule practitioners based on qualifications may need to explore ezClocker alternatives. Keep reading — I’ll reveal one of the best alternatives to ezClocker.

EzClocker Key Features

  • Time tracking: Track employee work hours, unpaid breaks, and daily/weekly overtime. Employees can track time on their mobile devices or clock in/out from a shared device via ezClocker’s kiosk app.
  • Employee scheduling: Create and assign shifts manually, or use the copy-forward function to replicate an employee’s schedule to future weeks. However, EzClocker lacks the essential shift scheduling automation tools like recurring shifts, drag-and-drop function, shift swaps, and conflict detector.
  • Time off management: You can’t use accrual or lump-sum leave assignment, but can set a notice period for each request. There are only four types of leaves, and ezClocker doesn’t let you add new ones, which is disappointing.

Pros

  • Budget-friendly prices
  • Apps are easy-to-use
  • Time tracker supports geofencing
  • Allows notice period for leave requests

Cons

  • Limited integrations
  • No offline mode
  • Lacks advanced features
  • No built-in reports

EzClocker Pricing

Compared to products with a similar feature suite, ezClocker is not only affordable but also delivers good value for the money. For comparison, ezClocker’s Basic plan costs just $10 per month for 15 employees, while TrackingTime charges $57.50 for similar features.

EzClocker has a free plan, which is surprisingly not advertised on the pricing page. I could only view the free plan details after logging into my account. With the free plan, you have access to time tracking and scheduling features. However, you can have one employee on the free plan, which makes it ideal for freelancers and solopreneurs.

EzClocker uses a tiered pricing model with three paid plans: Basic (15 employees), Standard (30 employees), and Premium (100 employees). You can choose between a monthly or annual billing cycle, with the latter offering discounts for long-term subscriptions.

All paid plans include all essential features, such as time tracking, employee scheduling, and GPS verification. However, the Standard and Premium plans offer additional features such as overtime reports, payroll integrations, and job assignments.

What I liked is that there are no hidden fees, so it’s easy to calculate initial and recurring costs. Additionally, there are no long-term contracts; you can upgrade or downgrade your subscription as you see fit.

EzClocker Usability and Interface

In this section, I’ll take you through ezClocker’s setup process and reveal just how user-friendly its apps really are. Read on for full details:

Setting Up EzClocker

Signing up and creating an ezClocker account is easy. I only needed to click “try for free” on the homepage or “try ezClocker now” on the pricing page. I then filled out the signup form, clicked “sign up,” and that was it.

Screenshot showing the ezClocker signup page.
Creating an ezClocker account is very simple.

EzClocker serves up a pop-up window to confirm that your account is ready. You’ll have to click “ok” to access your dashboard. I bet most users would appreciate being taken straight to the dashboard instead of dealing with this extra, unnecessary step.

Once you’re on the dashboard, ezClocker greets you with a six-minute welcome video that shows you around. You can watch the video to learn how to add users, use key features, and configure vital settings. I commend ezClocker for creating a detailed video that provides the instructions a beginner would need to get started.

EzClocker should work just fine on default settings. However, you might want to tweak some settings to activate advanced tools like GPS location at clock in/out, geofence, automatic breaks, and overtime. Adjusting the settings is easy, but bear in mind that the settings page is peculiarly tucked in the “account details” page under the “account preferences” section.

User management

Adding an employee is pretty straightforward. Go to the dashboard and click “add employee” to access the employee form, which has two tabs: “general” and “permissions.” In the general tab, you can add details like employee name, email, kiosk PIN, role, and hourly rate. Next, open the permissions tab to configure the employee’s permission.

 Screenshot showing an employee form
EzClocker lets you add a kiosk PIN manually when adding an employee.

I really loved being able to add all the employee details on a single page. It eliminates the hassle of having to switch between pages, speeding up the process. EzClocker also lets you send the invite via email or SMS, which is great.

The employee will only need to click “accept invitation” to enable their account. What I really liked is that if an employee completes this step on a mobile device, ezClocker provides a link to the respective app store. This makes it easy to install the app without manually searching for it.

That said, there were aspects I didn’t like. For example, ezClocker doesn’t offer an option to add employees in bulk. If you have a large workforce, adding employees to your team will take hours of manual work. Additionally, you have to share the kiosk PIN manually, which can be cumbersome.

Verdict: 7.5/10

EzClocker Web App

When you log in, ezClocker takes you straight to the dashboard. One thing you’ll notice right away is that the web app looks dated. Its overall design lacks the polished look and smooth aesthetics you’d expect from modern apps. Moreover, the combination of colors isn’t visually pleasing, and the buttons and icons look generic.

Screenshot showing ezClocker web app interface
EzClocker web app doesn’t look modern, but it’s easy to use.

While the layout looks unconventional, I found the web app easy to navigate. This is primarily because of the top navigation panel, which features five items: dashboard, schedules, employee archive, account, and help. You can click any of the menu items to jump straight to the things you want to accomplish.

That said, the lack of a visual style makes pages look cluttered; not with details but with yellow buttons. I must also mention that some ezClocker’s elements aren’t responsive on smaller screens. For example, on pages like the employee page, you have to swipe right to see more details, which takes away from the overall user experience.

ezClocker also doesn’t consider users with visual and hearing impairments in its design. I didn’t find any details confirming whether the software is compatible with screen readers and other assistive apps. One thing I did verify is that ezClocker is only available in English, which makes it unfit for teams with non-English speakers.

Verdict: 7/10

EzClocker Mobile App

The EzClocker mobile app works on Android and iOS devices (including tablets). I used the Android version, which I found easy to install from the Google Play Store. Like the web app, the app lacks a modern visual appeal, but it’s still neat and well-organized. Navigation is effortless, but the layout varies by the user’s role.

Manager version

Managers land on the dashboard, which displays a list of employees and their punch status, either clocked in or clocked out. This is a smart design choice meant to help managers monitor team attendance immediately.

Screenshot showing EzClocker’s manager app
The manager version offers all ezClocker’s features.

The app has a navigation panel at the top with settings, vertical ellipses, and add-user icons. The organization of options helps declutter the interface while keeping all features within reach.

The manager’s version mirrors the functionality of the web app in terms of capability. It lets you add users, add locations, manage jobs, create schedules, and perform other admin duties.

Employee version

The employee version is also neat, but instead of having the navigation at the top, it places it at the bottom. This is in line with many time tracking apps, so employees transitioning from another software will feel at home from day one.

The menu displays clock time, schedule, and timesheet: exactly what employees need to stay on top of their schedule and work hours. The first thing employees see when they launch the app is the clock time page, which displays conspicuous clock-in/out buttons. This enables users to clock in without switching between tabs.

Screenshot showing the employee’s mobile app
The employee’s version is trimmed down to essential tools.

Unfortunately, the employee version displays a time clock, rather than the hours an employee has logged. It shows when a session started, but it would be beneficial if it showed hours logged to help users pace their work accordingly. Another issue is that the app lacks an offline mode, and it might not be apt for field teams.

EzClocker Core Functionalities

I tested ezClocker rigorously to understand how its time tracking, scheduling, and time off management features work. In this section, I’ll reveal the strengths and weaknesses of these tools to help you make an informed decision. Read on for the nitty-gritty details:

Time tracking

EzClocker has built a powerful time tracking system that has all the features you’d need for accurate timesheets. What stood out to me right from the start was the software’s ability to log time on various devices.

Mobile and field employees can track time on their smartphones using the Android and iOS apps. This option is apt for teams in some of the industries ezClocker serves, like construction, catering, healthcare, and landscaping. On the other hand, office-based employees can track time on desktop devices.

Screenshots showing the mobile app before and after clocking in.
The break button appears when an employee clocks in.

Moreover, ezClocker offers a kiosk app, which is available on Android and iOS tablets only. With the kiosk app, on-site teams can clock in/out from a shared device. I didn’t test the kiosk app, but from what I have read, it tracks employee time without a hitch.

I liked the ability to restrict early clock-ins. This is useful where employees tend to clock in before they get to the worksite to seem like they arrived early. EzClocker also records employee GPS coordinates when they clock in or out. This helps you check if they clocked in or out while at the worksite.

Another helpful tool is geofencing, which lets you restrict employees from clocking in/out while outside the job site. During my testing, I created a mock worksite and set a geofence radius of 100 meters. EzClocker blocked my attempt to clock in when outside the designated job site, proving that the feature was effective.

Screenshot showing ezClocker’s geofence alerts.
EzClocker prevented me from clocking in and showed how far I was from the job site.

Break tracking

If you want to track break time, you must enable “allow breaks” and “enable automatic breaks.” The former presents employees with a break button on the mobile app, allowing them to track breaks manually.

The manual break function works well, but it might not suffice for companies in countries and regions with strict break laws. For example, there are no reminders to start or end breaks, which can lead to missed or prolonged breaks. Additionally, the app doesn’t prevent employees from ending their break early, which increases the risk of non-compliance.

Thankfully, ezClocker offers an automatic break function to remedy missed and prolonged breaks. Once you activate this feature, the app automatically deducts the predefined break time from an employee’s work hours. The feature worked as defined during my testing.

Screenshot showing ezClocker’s break options
It’s easy to add automatic break time and define when it should be deducted.

EzClocker manual and automatic breaks work for companies that need to track unpaid breaks, like meal breaks. However, companies in states and regions that require both paid and unpaid breaks, like California, will find it less effective.

Overtime tracking

You can also track weekly and daily overtime with ezClocker. I appreciate the flexibility to adjust the overtime threshold to suit underlying labor laws. For example, companies in California can set ‌daily and weekly thresholds of 8 hours and 40 hours. If an employee’s work hours exceed the predefined threshold, ezClocker marks the excess as overtime.

Screenshot showing ezClocker’s overtime options
EzClocker lets you configure the overtime threshold to adhere to labor laws.

One of my gripes here is that you can’t configure ezClocker to track other types of overtime. For example, it can’t track daily double time and seventh consecutive day overtime. If you’re in a state or country that mandates overtime, you’re better off using a more robust alternative like Connecteam overtime tracker

Another issue is that ezClocker’s weekly overtime works for businesses that follow a single or bi-weekly pay period. If your business has a different pay period, like a bi-monthly pay period, you may want to look for an alternative.

Verdict: 8/10

Employee scheduling

EzClocker’s employee scheduling feels like an afterthought, especially considering how powerful the time tracker is. While the scheduler is functional, it lacks a drag-and-drop function, which has become a standard tool these days. It also doesn’t offer tools like recurring shifts and shift swaps.

Screenshot showing ezClocker schedule page
Adding a shift is as easy as clicking a cell corresponding to an employee.

The scheduling grid offers a weekly view only, with employees listed to the left and days at the top. To create a shift, first click on a cell corresponding to an employee and a day. And then add the shift details, including location, date, time, and notes or special instructions.

The only advanced tool available is the copy-forward function, which lets you replicate an employee’s schedule to future weeks. It eliminates the need to create weekly schedules repeatedly, saving you the manual hassle.

Besides the missing features I mentioned earlier, ezClocker lacks an automatic schedule conflict detector. I attempted to create two overlapping shifts, and to my surprise, the app published the schedule without warning. This means that managers have to pinpoint conflicts manually, which can be tedious and ineffective.

Screenshot showing the shift detail page
EzClocker lets you stipulate the location of each shift.

EzClocker claims to be suitable for industries with strict labor laws like healthcare, but I think the scheduling feature falls short. For example, there’s no way to enforce work hour regulations and mandatory rest periods.

Moreover, ezClocker doesn’t support role-based scheduling, which makes it difficult to schedule nurses and other staff within their scope of practice. If you need an employee scheduling app that can enforce industry regulations, use Connecteam scheduling

Verdict: 6.5/10

Time off management

The EzClocker time off management module isn’t the most powerful I have seen, but it gets the job done. It supports four types of leaves: paid time off (PTO), paid sick, unpaid time off, and paid holiday. While these time-offs cover the basis for most companies, some business owners may be disappointed by the lack of customizable ‌leave types.

Screenshot showing time off page on mobile
EzClocker lets managers manage time off on mobile devices.

One feature many managers will love is the ability to set a notice period. EzClocker lets you set the minimum number of days in advance that employees must submit a leave request. I have found this helpful as it gives managers ample time to review requests. Moreover, managers can adjust schedules where necessary to maintain good staffing levels.

Employees can submit leave requests on any device, whereas managers can review and approve them even while on the go. One notable downside here is that ezClocker doesn’t notify managers via email or push notifications when employees submit requests.

However, when a manager logs into the web app, they are greeted with a new time off pop-up notification. This ensures no request slips through the cracks, though it would be better if it notified managers via push notifications.

Screenshot showing the time request page on mobile
EzClocker allows employees to request time off on mobile.

Interestingly, employees get an instant push notification when a manager approves or rejects their requests. EzClocker also marks the time off on the team’s schedule to prevent managers from assigning shifts to unavailable team members.

Verdict: 7/10

EzClocker Integrations

EzClocker’s native integration options are quite limited compared to what ‌popular time tracking systems offer. The software supports integrations with:

  • Paychex
  • ADP Workforce
  • Gusto Payroll
  • ACS Technologies

The list is underwhelming, and what makes it even worse is the lack of support for Zapier and API integrations. This means that you can’t connect ezClocker to other solutions, except those on the list above, which is disappointing.

EzClocker requests users to email them if they don’t see an integration they need. However, it’s not clear whether the provider can build custom integrations for you, but there’s no harm in trying your luck.

Verdict: 5.5/10

Reporting and Analytics

EzClocker doesn’t offer reporting and analytics capability, which is disappointing. However, you can generate timesheets and download them in Excel format to streamline the payroll process. You can also generate overtime reports to analyze and control labor costs.

Unfortunately, you can’t analyze the available data to derive insights for accurate decision making. It’d be better if ezClocker offered built-in reports, or an option to create custom ones, to analyze things like time-off requests, attendance insights, and labor costs.

Verdict: 5/10

EzClocker Security Features

EzClocker claims to ensure the highest level of security when dealing with customers. I found no publicly reported data breach or security incidents linked to ezClocker, which authenticates the security claim.

EzClocker claims that data in transit travels via encrypted channels, while data at rest is encrypted “using the same advanced encryption technologies that banks use.” Most banks use AES 256-bit encryption, and it would be great if ezClocker used the same cipher.

Regarding user authentication, ezClocker uses the standard email password login. The provider enforces strong password best practices to boost account security. However, it’s always good to back email-password login with multi-factor authentication (MFA) to reduce the threat surface. Unfortunately, ezClocker doesn’t support any type of MFA, which is a major drawback.

Information regarding ezClocker’s compliance with data and security regulations around the world is scarce. The only details I found are that the company complies with the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

The privacy policy claims the provider focuses primarily on businesses in the United States. It’s not surprising, then, that ezClocker doesn’t explicitly state whether it’s GDPR-compliant.

Verdict: 7/10

EzClocker Customer Support

EzClocker support is limited, missing popular channels you’d expect from any modern provider, like live chat and a knowledge base. When you run into issues, support is available through email and phone only. There’s an FAQ page that answers the most common questions about the product.

The lack of live chat support is disappointing because it means users have to resort to other means to solve urgent issues. Moreover, with no knowledge base, users can’t find self-service options, which is disappointing.

Another issue is that ezClocker is geared towards businesses in the United States. For this reason, phone support might not be helpful for users outside the target region. Plus, phone support is only available Monday – Friday from 9:00am CST to 5:00pm CST. So, if you hit a snag outside those hours, support may be hard to come by.

Verdict: 6/10

EzClocker App Review

EzClocker interface lacks a modern and polished aesthetic. Despite its appearance, ezClocker is functional and easy to use, thanks to the well-structured layout.

It might not be a top-tier time tracking solution, but it’s worth trying if you need a simple solution to streamline remuneration. This is because its time tracking module is quite robust, and it offers advanced tools like geofencing. The app also tracks breaks and overtime, though I wouldn’t recommend it for businesses in states with strict labor laws like California.

EzClocker scheduling is ideal for small businesses with simple scheduling needs. However, it lacks the advanced tools to support scheduling for businesses with complex needs. For example, it could be more useful if it had a drag-and-drop feature, recurring shifts, and a conflict detector. The story is the same for the time-off module: it gets the job done but lacks key advanced features.

Connecteam: The Better EzClocker Alternative

Connecteam offers ‌advanced time tracking and scheduling features for businesses with field, deskless, or mobile workforces. I have found it to be one of the best (if not the best) ezClocker alternatives, for various reasons, including:

Powerful geofencing

Every time I use the Connecteam time tracking feature, three things stand out to me: time card accuracy, ease of use, and compliance. You don’t have to invest in expensive gadgets to track employees’ work hours.

Instead, simply request employees to use the easy-to-use mobile apps on their Android or iOS devices. Alternatively, convert any iOS or Android tablet and smartphone into a kiosk app and allow employees to clock in/out from a shared device.

Connecteam utilizes timely clock-in/out reminders, auto-clock-out, and facial recognition to enhance time card accuracy. Facial recognition prevents buddy punching, one of the most common time theft tactics.

My favorite feature is geofencing, which lets you erect virtual fences around your worksite.

Geofences ensure employees clock in only when they reach the worksite. They also clock out on-site employees when they leave the job site, ensuring you pay them for hours spent on real jobs.

Connecteam geolocation and time clock status illustration

Compliant break and overtime tracking

If you’re in California or other states that mandate paid and unpaid breaks, Connecteam break tracking is for you. With this feature, you can track breaks either manually or automatically. For example, businesses in California can choose to track rest breaks automatically and meal breaks manually.

To enhance compliance with manual breaks, Connecteam reminds users to start ‌and end breaks on time. It also prevents employees from ending breaks before the mandated time is over, enhancing compliance. I also like how easy it is to create a break attestation tool using Connecteam Forms and a digital signature.

Additionally, Connecteam lets you track any type of overtime, whether that be daily, daily double-time, weekly, holiday, or seventh consecutive day of overtime. You have the flexibility to set the overtime threshold and rates. What I really love is that Connecteam calculates overtime pay automatically, saving you the manual hassle.

Automatic scheduling

Connecteam scheduling offers all the tools you’d expect from the best employee scheduling software. All the usual suspects are there, including drag-and-drop functions, templates, recurring shifts, and real-time notifications. You also get advanced tools like shift swaps, which allow workers to find replacements on their own, reducing the manager’s manual load.

The standout feature is Connecteam’s auto-scheduler, which eliminates the manual effort, allowing you to assign hundreds of shifts in minutes. The good thing is that the auto-scheduler considers scheduling rules, and employee availability and qualification. This makes it ideal for businesses with specific scheduling requirements like healthcare.

A graphic showing the employee scheduling feature with a healthcare worker in the Connecteam app.

Additionally, Connecteam has a built-in automatic conflict detector. It flags issues like overlapping shifts, shifts that exceed an employee’s limit, and more, prompting you to correct them before publishing the schedule. Ensuring published schedules are conflict-free goes a long way towards minimizing last-minute changes and staffing issues.

Get started with Connecteam for free today to get a first-hand feel for these features and others like GPS location tracking, task management, and knowledge management.
