Field-focused construction management with strong quality and safety controls—but lacks geofencing and scheduling tools

Verdict: 7.2/10

I think Raken is a solid construction management tool, especially for daily reporting. It streamlines field documentation, making it a great fit for medium to large firms focused on safety and quality control.

Its offline capabilities, which let field teams save data from their last 5 projects in low-connectivity areas, impressed me. The safety and quality management—including the extensive library of pre-built checklists—also stand out.

However, Raken has some limitations. For example, while it includes GPS-based time tracking, it lacks geofencing. And the absence of shift scheduling and advanced project management tools might challenge large teams.

Key Features:

  • Daily reporting: Generate and customize detailed daily reports with weather tracking, manpower allocation, and progress updates.
  • Safety & quality management: Access 100+ pre-built construction safety templates and create custom inspection checklists.
  • Time clock: Track worker hours through mobile, web, or kiosk interfaces using GPS capabilities.
  • Document and certification management: Store and organize project documents, photos, and videos, plus worker certifications and credentials.
  • Production tracking: Monitor equipment usage, material quantities, and work progress across projects.

  • Lacks dynamic team communication tools

Raken Pricing

Raken follows a tiered pricing model that scales based on features, team size, and user count. I found different pricing details across platforms. I got the following details from its mobile app when I started using the trial for the Performance Plan:

Plan NamePricingFeatures
StarterFreeBasic project management, Daily Reports, Time Cards, Task Management
Raken Basic Plan$34.67/monthConstruction Management, Daily Reports
Raken Professional Plan$80.00/monthDaily Reports, Time Cards, Task Management
Raken Performance Plan$93.33/monthProject Analytics, Subcontractor Access, Daily Reports, Time Cards, Task Management

Initially, I thought these plans were actual subscription options, but after reaching out to support, I learned this wasn’t the case

According to Raken’s team, “The pricing you see is simply the ‘per month/per user’ costs for in-app store purchases via Apple or Google Play. Our team subscriptions are customized based on a few factors… number of users, features used, or company size.”

I find this pretty confusing…the mobile app didn’t indicate that these options were for in-app store purchases rather than subscriptions.

I was confused even more when I used the web app and added a team member. The app showed: “1 additional seat ($66 per month).” This message kept changing as I added new members, reflecting the scaling costs—for instance, 2 additional seats totaled an extra $132/month, while 3 additional seats cost $198/month. I’m guessing these fees are in addition to custom base subscription fees.

This difference between the web and mobile app pricing details makes me wonder: Do businesses pay different rates for users accessing Raken through the mobile app versus the web app?

Whatever the case may be, the hefty ($34+) per-user pricing might make Raken relatively expensive, especially compared with competitors like Autodesk Build and CoConstruct, which offer unlimited users in their pricing plans.

Ultimately, the lack of transparent pricing—plus the confusion caused by the available information—makes it difficult to estimate costs upfront. You should contact Raken’s support team to get an exact quote based on your team’s needs.

Alternatives like Connecteam offer other capabilities (like scheduling and geofencing), adding more value for the money.

Raken Usability and Interface

Screenshot of a project activity log on Raken with a sidebar containing navigation options for Dashboard, Reports, Projects, Team, Time, Messages, and Company.
Rakens offers an intuitive navigation experience with a clearly organized sidebar.

While I was testing the platform, Raken rolled out a new interface that felt better than the basic version I’d used before. The new interface adopts a modern, clean design that balances functionality and simplicity.

The left sidebar navigation offers clear icons and labels for Dashboard, Activity, Reports, Projects, Team, Time, Messages, and Company settings. This vertical layout (previously horizontal) provides quick access to core functions while keeping everything organized in a neat hierarchy.

The Activity feed, which serves as a central hub, displays a chronological timeline of project updates with a clean, card-based layout. I appreciated the straightforward filtering system at the top, featuring a date range selector (“Last 30 Days”) and additional filters that help narrow down specific activities.

The interface uses a consistent color scheme, with blue accents highlighting important actions and status indicators.

The improved contrast ratios and clearer text hierarchy make the new design pretty accessible. However, keyboard navigation options and screen reader optimization are somewhat limited.

Verdict: 8/10

Mobile app

The Raken mobile app is much different than its web counterpart. It has a minimalist design with ample white space and clear typography. The app’s navigation is built around a bottom bar with quick access to key functions: Projects, Activity, Time Clock, and More (“More” is the menu).

The clock interface features a 2-tab layout (“Clock” and “Timesheets”) with prominent action buttons. Plus, the daily logs section is thoughtfully optimized for mobile, with a calendar-style date picker and clearly organized sections for work logs, notes, surveys, and attachments.

That said, analytics and reporting features are missing, and image loading can be slow in field conditions.

But I appreciate the offline functionality, which caches data for the last 5 projects. This is great for users on construction sites with poor connectivity, though it may be potentially limiting for larger operations needing offline access to more projects.

Raken Core Functionalities

Time tracking

Raken approaches time tracking through 3 main methods: supervisor-led timecards, personal time tracking, and kiosk-based tracking. I tested each method extensively.

First, site supervisors can create and manage timecards for their entire crew through both the web and mobile apps, allocating hours across different cost codes. I found this useful for projects where workers lack mobile devices or don’t want to bring their devices on site.

However, manually entering time data for multiple workers is time-consuming, and Raken doesn’t have bulk editing capabilities that would enable users to, say, update work hours for an entire construction crew at once.

Personal time tracking through the mobile app enables workers to clock in/out themselves directly through the “My Time” tab. They can even select projects and add notes.

I like how workers are prompted to take selfies when they clock in/out, and AI technology verifies their identities. If the photo ID doesn’t match, the system flags the entry for review.

During testing, I noticed that while employees can start and stop the timer in the same tab, they must go to the project tab to edit time entries—which I think creates unnecessary hassle.

Also, while the basic clock-in/out and break functionality works well, the timer often started at inconsistent times for me (like 00:10 or 00:35 instead of 00:00). This could create issues if you want to accurately track time down to the second.

The kiosk mode turns a mobile device into a centralized time-tracking station that prevents buddy punching and maintains clear site attendance records.

Unfortunately, Raken doesn’t offer web-based time tracking through a timer, unlike apps such as Connecteam.

The break tracking functionality lets workers log different types of breaks (lunch or rest) directly from the “My Time” tab in the mobile app—or through the employee kiosk. The system shows a warning if a worker hasn’t taken a mandatory break, which is great for compliance purposes.

Raken also offers overtime management functionality. You can configure multiple overtime rules for different jurisdictions so overtime is tracked—and your workers are paid—accurately. I appreciate how the system can handle both daily and weekly overtime thresholds.

Screenshot of an overtime settings screen showing a rule named "Weekly" with a regular time limit of 40 hours per week.
Raken’s overtime option lets you configure overtime rules, including setting a daily or weekly limit for regular hours.

However, it lacks overtime alerts, predictive warnings, and more granular overtime rules—including holiday pay multipliers—which tools like Connecteam offer.

Finally, Raken provides basic timesheets and payroll features. Hours logged via mobile app, kiosk, or digital time cards—including breaks and overtime—are compiled into detailed timesheets for review and approval. Admins or managers can manually verify flagged entries, selfies, and locations before approving or rejecting timesheets.

Verdict: 7/10

GPS tracking and labor map view

The GPS tracking functionality provides basic location verification for clock-ins and clock-outs, showing the GPS coordinates for each punch. This is useful for verifying time entries, but I wish it offered more advanced features like geofencing to restrict clock-ins to job site boundaries. It also lacks the real-time location tracking that competitors like Connecteam and Buddy Punch offer, which is useful for monitoring your workers on-shift routes.

That said, I like how the Labor Map view offers a 30-day snapshot of workforce distribution. Supervisors can toggle between 2 views: an employee-centric view showing individual work locations and a project-centric view displaying headcount and labor allocation across sites.

Verdict: 7/10

Site safety & quality tools

Raken offers comprehensive safety and quality tools, including:

  • Checklists: Managed checklists can be assigned to workers with scheduled completion dates and times to ensure data is gathered at the right time. Raken provides a pre-built library of industry-standard safety checklists. I appreciate that you can also create custom checklists aligned with specific safety protocols.

Production and subcontractors management

Raken’s production tracking combines equipment management and field productivity monitoring.

I found its equipment tracking thorough: It covers usage, maintenance schedules, and deficiencies for owned and rented equipment.

Equipment entry form for logging excavator details, including ID, make, condition, deployment, hours tracking, and fuel usage options.

The system lets you track the materials your crew has installed (including quantities) and equipment hours in real time, feeding this data into an analytics dashboard that helps you adjust schedules for projects and manage your budget. (Historical data also helps you refine future bids and job costing.)

You can easily invite subcontractors and external partners to collaborate on projects. They can submit daily reports, upload media and documents, and participate in checklists and observations—and their access is limited to shared items.

Managing multiple subcontractors’ reports can be time-consuming, but Raken’s Super Dailies feature consolidates all subcontractor reports into one comprehensive daily update. I found this especially useful for project managers: They can quickly review progress and address issues without chasing individual reports.

These features are great, but they could be more advanced. For instance, I wish there was less manual data entry required for certain tasks, plus more advanced project management features—like detailed financial tracking.

Verdict: 8/10

Document storage and certifications

Raken’s document storage helps construction teams manage and organize project files efficiently. Users can upload, store, and share documents like blueprints, safety reports, and daily logs into one centralized space. I like the bulk uploads, custom folders, and keyword search—which makes finding files quick and easy.

The Raken document management tool allows users to upload photos, select files, or create folders for organizing project documents.
The Raken document management tool allows users to upload photos, select files, or create folders for organizing project documents.

However, for advanced features like document packs and broader e-signing support, a competitor like Connecteam is the better choice. While Raken allows e-signing for checklists and reports, it doesn’t support this for other documents.

Raken also simplifies certification tracking, letting teams assign certifications, set expiration dates, and attach supporting documents to keep qualifications current and accessible.

Communication tools

Raken’s directory feature offers a centralized view of company members, simplifying role management. Plus, users can create distinct directories for each project.

The project directory helps manage team roles, view member statuses, and track pending invites.
The project directory helps manage team roles, view member statuses, and track pending invites.

The messaging system enables real-time communication between field and office teams with direct messages, group chats, and file sharing. Channels help you organize discussions by project, team, or topic—such as “company announcements” or “safety updates.”

However, I found Raken’s messaging somewhat basic. It lacks interactive elements like polls, quizzes, or file annotations, and the chat isn’t as well integrated with its other features—like time tracking—as competitors’ chat features are.

Verdict: 6/10

Raken integrations

Raken offers a range of integrations to simplify construction management by connecting with various third-party tools. Integrations include accounting and payroll software like QuickBooks Online, Sage 300 CRE, and Paychex. Plus, Raken integrates with project management platforms such as Procore and Autodesk, along with cloud storage solutions like Google Drive and Dropbox.

However, compared with alternatives like Procore, Raken’s integration options are more limited, especially in areas like procurement and advanced scheduling. It also lacks deeper ERP integrations, which could enhance overall workflow automation.

Verdict: 7/10

Raken Security Features

Here are some of Raken’s key security features:

  • Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit and at rest, ensuring sensitive information is protected from unauthorized access.
  • Two-factor authentication: Raken requires users to use 2 methods of verification to access their accounts.
  • Access controls: Users have complete control over who can access their data. Data is private by default and can be accessed by invited users only.
  • Data storage: All data is stored in secure AWS data centers within the US.

Plus, Raken complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), ensuring that user data is handled according to strict privacy standards.

Verdict: 9/10

Raken Reporting & Analytics

The reports menu provides project summaries, time tracking, equipment logs, and production data.
The reports menu provides project summaries, time tracking, equipment logs, and production data.

Raken offers various reports to help managers gain insights into project performance and workforce efficiency, including:

  • Daily Reports: Track daily progress, including photos, notes, and weather conditions.
  • Safety Reports: Document safety observations, incidents, and compliance with safety protocols.
  • Quality Reports: Record quality control checks and issues, ensuring adherence to standards.
  • Equipment Reports: Monitor equipment usage, maintenance schedules, and downtime.
  • Compliance Reports: Track report compliance, showing completed and missed reports by project.
  • Manpower Reports: Analyze workforce allocation and utilization across projects.

I like that you can easily select the desired report type, customize parameters, and generate reports with just a few clicks. Plus, you can export them in various formats, including PDF, Excel, and CSV.

Raken organizes data into visual dashboards and charts, helping you use insights to make informed decisions quickly. That said, while Raken may use advanced analytics, it lacks AI capabilities for project oversight and performance improvement.

Verdict: 8/10

Raken Customer Support

Raken support is available weekdays (7:00 am-4:00 pm Pacific Time) through multiple channels, including phone, email, and live chat. Plus, the knowledge base offers comprehensive documentation and tutorials, making it easy to find answers to common questions without support.

I found Raken’s customer support team responsive and knowledgeable. I got a response within minutes through live chat, and reps consistently responded to my email queries afterward.

However, the limited support hours could pose challenges for users in different time zones needing immediate assistance during off-hours.

Verdict: 7/10

Raken App Review

Raken is an excellent construction management tool that excels in daily reporting and field documentation. I think it’s ideal for medium to large firms prioritizing safety compliance and quality control—especially those working on remote sites and needing offline access to the app.

That said, Raken lacks geofencing, built-in shift scheduling, and advanced real-time project management. It also relies heavily on manual data entry and doesn’t offer bulk editing tools.

Connecteam: The Better Raken Alternative

The Connecteam construction app is a cost-effective, user-friendly alternative to Raken. Here are some of its features.

Time tracking and kiosk

Connecteam provides multiple time tracking methods. Its employee time clock allows seamless clock-ins from mobile and desktops devices, and there’s even a kiosk mode. I appreciate that you can bulk edit your workers’ timesheets.

Unlike Raken, Connecteam offers geofencing, which prevents workers from tracking time outside job sites. Plus, real-time location tracking is great for enhancing accountability and safety.

Employees can also clock in and out of breaks, and Connecteam also tracks overtime hours.

It offers advanced features that Raken doesn’t have, too: real-time alerts, predictive warnings, granular overtime rules (including holiday pay multipliers), direct payroll integration, and superior reporting.

Checklists and task management

Connecteam’s digital forms and checklists help construction workers streamline tasks, safety checks, and compliance reporting with mobile-friendly templates. Unlike Raken, it offers customizable forms, automated reminders, and real-time tracking of form completion.

Plus, its task management feature lets you assign specific tasks, set priorities within projects, and track task progress in real time.

Knowledge base and certification racking

The company knowledge base centralizes policies, guides, and manuals for easy access via mobile or desktop. Connecteam also lets managers track workers’ certifications and other staff documents, set expiration dates, and attach supporting documents.

Communication

The online team chat supports 1:1 and group discussions and integrates with the scheduler, task manager, and more. There’s also an internal help desk for field ticketing—and a social-media-style company updates feed for broadcasting messages to your entire crew.

And much more

Unlike Raken, which lacks shift scheduling, Connecteam provides rich staff scheduling features. There’s also employee rewards, surveys and polls, training, and much more—all at affordable pricing.
