   Why I chose Connecteam: Unlike most org chart software solutions, Connecteam is part of a larger ecosystem of employee engagement and management tools, from employee chat software to its onboarding features. Overall, you get a lot for your money if you go with Connecteam. Plus, the org chart software is easy-to-use, advanced, and heavily automated. 

   Automated org chart maker 

   Connecteam makes creating an org chart that helps you and your staff understand the hierarchy, roles, and reporting lines within your company easy.  

   To get started, you simply upload your employee data into your employees’ user profiles. You can manually input this directly into the platform—or import it from a CSV file. You should include employee names, departments, roles, and manager relationships. You can also ask employees to upload their own profile pictures using the staff documents feature—or upload them on their behalf. 

   The software then auto-generates a professional-looking org chart, which you can alter using the drag-and-drop editor, a design toolkit I found highly intuitive to use. 

   

   Adding, editing, and removing employees is also a breeze. You can even bulk edit employee profiles, and changes you make will be automatically applied to the chart. 

   Compared with the other tools on the list, I think Connecteam’s interface feels the most sleek and modern. 

   Employee cards

   The org chart is made up of “employee cards”—which I find visually appealing and useful for getting quick information. By default, each employee card on your chart displays the employee’s name, photo, title, and number of direct reports.

   

   However, you can customize the cards—pulling details like the employee’s role or location into the card—to suit your business’s needs. 

   Org chart navigation and employee messaging 

   I appreciate the ability to filter the org chart to find specific employees. You can message employees directly from the org chart using Connecteam’s team instant messaging—without having to hop onto another platform. 

   I think this could dramatically streamline the process of finding and communicating with peers from other departments.   

   Other in-chart actions range from updating user profiles to assigning new direct managers. You can also export the chart as a PNG. 

   I love the “Focus on Me” button, which zooms the chart into your employee card. This simple navigational tool keeps new employees (and vets) from getting lost in the chart, and it helps them understand their role in context of the overall team structure.  

   Additional features 

   Unlike most org chart platforms, which are point solutions, Connecteam provides you with all the tools you need to manage your employees and promote collaboration.

   Pingboard is an org chart and employee directory software for improving employee engagement and communication. 

   Why I chose Pingboard: Pingboard gives you the tools required to build and visualize not only an org chart but also an in-depth, dynamic company directory with employee profiles.  

   Org chart creation and visualization 

   Connect Pingboard and your IT or HR software to create an auto-generated org chart that employees can easily reference in various views. You can also upload a CSV to do the same. 

   You can also edit your charts using Pingboard’s org chart maker, which gives you 3 card options—assistant, role, and department. You can drag these cards into the editor, name them, and assign them to people on your team.

   Notably, the platform also lets you add job openings to the chart so your peers know which departments are hiring. 

   I really liked the Planning View—a feature that lets you visualize different what-if scenarios for a reorganization or company growth plan using the chart. 

   I would’ve liked to see more customizability in terms of shapes and colors to denote certain reporting structures and role types, but the tool still gets the job done. 

   Searchable directory 

   Pingboard also offers a searchable directory that enables employees to quickly learn about the people they work with. I found the filtering function especially useful for navigating the directory. Filters include location, group, department, team, job title, and even skills. 

   I imagine the skills filter would be useful for finding the right team members for specific initiatives. 

   To set up the directory, you can connect the platform with your HRIS system. It’ll update in response to changes in the HRIS. 

   Employee engagement tools 

   Pingboard also offers notifications about new hires and upcoming celebrations. Plus, you can create employee profiles that share fun facts about employees, like interests and skills. 

   There’s even a built-in networking game called Who’s Who? In the game, you basically take quizzes about your employees. For example, it might show you a picture of a worker’s face and ask “What’s this employee’s name?” In large companies where knowing one’s employees is key to upward advancement (finance, for example), this feature could prove helpful. 

   One problem: There aren’t tools to help with employee management.

   Lucidchart is a cloud-based diagramming application that allows users to create, modify, and share organizational charts and other business-related visualizations. 

   Why I chose Lucidchart: Lucidchart is easy to use and offers several features that enable team members to take a collaborative approach to building and refining organizational charts, such as real-time editing, version history, and change tracking. 

   Collaboration tools 

   I think Lucidchart’s collaboration functionality sets it apart from related organizational chart software: Users can share the org chart with team members and collaborate on the chart in real-time. With advanced sharing, you can even share it with members who lack a Lucidchart licence. 

   The change tracking and revision history features let you track changes to your organizational structure over various rounds of updates and edits. My favorite part? You can revert your chart back to a previous version.  

   I also appreciate the commenting feature, which enables users to ask questions and assign tasks to fellow editors as they build the org chart. 

   Template library 

   Lucidchart offers various organizational chart templates that streamline the org chart creation process. I think the Lucidchart team has considered all the different types of organizational structures a company might use. 

   For example, here are some of the most popular templates:

   • Restaurant org chart

   • Scrum team org chart

   Companies with highly unique org structures can also start from scratch and use the chart editor. 

   This editor offers much in terms of design—from shapes that denote certain positions to more advanced features like data linking and conditional formatting. 

   The interface felt outdated to me, but I appreciated that Lucidchart offered all the customization features you need to create a visually appealing org chart. 

   Scalability issues

   I ran into several user complaints about slow performance, especially when the charts grew too large or complex. 

   Also, despite Lucidchart having a free plan, the pricing quickly rises as you add Lucidchart users. So if you want to take advantage of the collaboration features and make the design a team effort, you must pay a price that’s generally higher than other tools on the market.

   Org chart templates

   SmartDraw’s built-in org chart templates come in various styles, each designed for different business verticals—from the corporate business to the travel agency. 

   My favorite part about the templates? They’re partially filled out with example job titles and structures. For example, the Marketing Team Chart breaks the department into 3 sub-divisions: internet, print, and art and design—each with 5-6 employees. This helps executives compare their current vision for their org structure against best practices. 

   Design features 

   The drag-and-drop editor provides you with multiple design options, letting you edit the chart’s shapes, colors, theme, and style. I found this editor incredibly easy to use. Adding assistants, co-managers, and other employee relationships was straightforward. 

   I would’ve liked to see a wider variety of themes (which are more like color schemes) so that companies could better match the org chart’s aesthetic to their company branding.

   Integrations 

   You can auto-generate an org chart using employee data from your HR system or an Excel file. The software connects seamlessly with popular HR tools like Workday and BambooHR. 

   It also integrates well with other business apps, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Atlassian apps like Confluence and Jira. Users can leverage these integrations to add org charts to other applications. 

   Thanks to integrations with file storage tools, SmartDraw will save your org charts to OneDrive, Sharepoint, Google Drive, or wherever else you store company documents.

   Why I chose Organimi: Known as one of the most intuitive org chart platforms, Organimi provides users with time-saving features, including 1-click org chart generation from CSV/spreadsheet imports, bulk editing, and a drag-and-drop interface for editing charts. 

   Org chart generation

   My favorite aspect of Organimi? You can upload a CSV file of company information to Organimi and receive an accurate organizational chart in minutes. You can then update and refine the chart using the drag-and-drop editor functionality that’s remarkably straightforward for beginners.  

   Organimi offers several customization options, too. For example, the color-coding feature enables you to differentiate departments by color. 

   I wish the basic plan allowed you to create unlimited matrix and governance charts. Unfortunately, only the premium solution does. 

   Chart sharing 

   By offering multiple sharing options and permission controls, Organimi enables you to share your org chart in the way that works best for your specific needs. 

   For example, you can give editing privileges to specific employees, while giving others view-only permissions. 

   I like the ability to hide certain fields from public viewing. Say you don’t want sales reps bombarding your executives with emails: You could hide the employee email address field. 

   Reporting 

   Organimi’s reporting functionality empowers you to analyze employee management data and gain insight into how your organization has grown over time.  

   You can also generate reports that clue you into the usage patterns of the software. For example, you could run a report to see how many org charts were generated in the last month. 

   Overall, I was expecting a little more from the reporting. I can’t really see anyone using most of the reports (especially since they’re focused solely on org charts) unless they were considering cancelling the subscription due to a lack of adoption and wanted some evidence to back it up.
